Winter Conference in Tallahassee If you haven't
made plans yet to attend, please do so NOW! I know JL budgets are tight, but even if your League can send just
one person you won't want to miss this informative and motivational training & strategy session. The registration
fee is $60 and includes lunch. Specific times will be set soon, but the event is from 10am to 3pm on Tuesday,
February 10th. Registration forms and a tenative agenda are attached.
With the budget in a $3 billion deficit,
we need to be on message and as sharp as possible to give the best support to our 3 Legislative Priorities.
Many thanks to our good friend, Jack Levine,
and SPAC legislative analyst, Charlotte Mather, for their planning efforts.
* Hotel, Capitol and meeting site are all within walking
distance.
What you need to know about the SPAC 2009 Legislative Priorities
Please see the attached
documents. One document titled, Talking Points for Committee Members, is background information for SPAC committee
members. The other document, titled 2009 Priorities, is a more polished version to share with your general membership,
legislators and other friends in the community.
Both of these documents will be available on our website
www.jlflspac.org as well.
A word about scheduling legislative visits...
-I
would suggest waiting to schedule visits until after the strategy session in Tallahassee, especially if you are new to SPAC. Then
you will feel informed, well trained and prepared for your visit.
-PLEASE share
what you have learned with your committee members, especially if they have not attended trainings or conferences before having
them accompany you to an office visit.
- If
you are going to see legislators while in Tallahassee, contact their office now and make an appointment. You don't
have to visit them in Tallahassee, if it doesn't work with your travel plans.
-It
is perfectly fine to schedule visits with legislators in their home district offices.
-Visits only
need to be about 15 minutes long.
-Keep in mind
that with the budget crunch, legislators aren't feeling too social. It's not a fun time for anyone. Be
respectful and appreciative.
-If you can't
get an appointment for some reason email or print out & mail our polished version of priorities with a brief note.
-After any visit, please follow
up with a handwritten thank you note.
Much of this information will be in the January e-newsletter going out over the weekend. Please share it with
your committee members.
Feel free to email me with any questions or suggestions!
